One PhD positions in Moire Physics from one-dimensional van Der Waals heterostructures

This PhD vacancies is supported by the Dutch Research Council (NWO) through the Vidi project entitled: “Moire materials from one-dimensional van der Waals heterostructures”.

The main goal of this project is to design, realize, and explore a new dimension in van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures. In particular, the PhD candidates will consider the design and implementation of novel fabrication strategies for the integration of van der Waals materials in one-dimensional (1D) heterostructures; their subsequent characterization with advanced transmission electron microscopy; and the interpretation of the results by means of theoretical calculations and machine learning. Topics to be covered in this project include emergent Moiré physics in 1D vdW heterostructures such as the Moiré excitons and low-energy electronic transitions. We will also assess the feasibility of 1D vdW heterostructures for single photon emitters.

Requirements: We welcome applications from outstanding candidates who have proved themselves within one or several of the following fields: nanofabrication, advanced transmission electron microscopy, electron-based spectroscopy, and machine learning applied to material science.

Applications: Please submit your motivation letter, CV, a summary of your Master thesis, a list with grades of the courses that you took during your studies, and names of two referees as one single PDF file and send it to email. Please also arrange for these two reference letters to be sent to the same address.

Conditions of employment: Doctoral candidates will be offered a 4-year period of employment in principle, but in the form of 2 employment contracts. An initial 1,5 year contract with an official go/no go progress assessment within 15 months. Followed by an additional contract for the remaining 2,5 years assuming everything goes well and performance requirements are met. Salary and benefits are in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities. As a PhD candidate you will be enrolled in the TU Delft Graduate School.

The application will remain open until the positions is filled.

One PhD positions in Electron Nanoscopy of Quantum Materials

This PhD positiom is supported by the European Research Council through the TESLA project: “Living on the Edge: Tunable Electronics from Edge Structures in 1D Layered Materials”.

The main goal of this project is to unravel the interplay between structural and electrical edge-induced properties in 1D layered materials by exploiting state-of-the-art electron microscopy and related techniques. This work will provide input towards novel quantum technologies for developing low-energy-consumption tunable electronics, efficient signal processing, and quantum computation.

Requirements: The PhD candidates hold a master degree in physics, mathematics, materials science, or related topics. Familiarity with advanced transmission electron microscopy tools would be a bonus, but it is not a requirement for applicants.

Applications: Please submit your motivation letter, CV, a summary of your Master thesis, a list with grades of the courses that you took during your studies, and names of two referees as one single PDF file and send it to email. Please also arrange for these two reference letters to be sent to the same address.
